Something to be going on with! Sorry that Peter and I have had to cancel today's class, but in the light of further snow in Bedford, it was clearly the best decision.

However, that does not let you entirely off the hook. There are a couple of things you can be thinking about and even doing.

First, you have now found the module blog. You will note that it has been used before! It was also the blog for the last previous run of the former incarnation of the module at Polhill, three years ago. I thought I'd leave that there so you can see the kind of things we did when we were less circumscribed by centrally prescribed Outcomes. In practice we shall cover much the same material this year, in a slightly different order, probably, and with different emphases.

So the plan is that we can negotiate the actual content and use of the time we have together, so as to concentrate on what you will find most useful.

To this end, when we do meet, Peter and I will go through the module information, and explain the outcomes, etc, to get past the stifling SVUK jargon. There will then be an opportunity to do a self-assessment exercise in which you can rate yourself, your present knowledge and practice, against the given outcomes and assessment criteria. So that you can try to make some sense of that in advance, the documentation is available here to download.

There will be an opportunity to discuss what you have come up with, and we shall use that as the basis for drawing up a more detailed schedule for the term, although it can always be amended. There is a briefing document and an empty schedule also available to download here. Of course that version has already been overtaken by events, with the cancellation of today's session.

The briefing document also tells you about the reading groups which we shall set up as the continuing exercise throughout the term (note that the 2007 version had a different continuing exercise). Assuming that the second session will be devoted to motivation, there are a few readings set up to do in advance. The reading from Zull (2002) will be made available for you to read when we meet (for copyright reasons) but you can read most of it here--because Google is somehow not as bound by copyright restrictions as the rest of us.
